Infrared Heat and Allergies
Today, the term “allergy” refers to a hypersensitivity of the immune system to foreign but harmless substances. It is not the “foreign substance” that causes the condition, but rather the immune system’s reaction to it.
Increase in allergic diseases
A significant increase in allergic diseases has been observed in industrialized countries, which cannot be explained by genetic predisposition. Allergens can include proteins, but also, for example, metals from various sources (animal dander, pollen, dust mites, food, and medications). Exposure occurs through the air, food, or the skin.
In simple terms, four main types of allergies (Types I through IV) are still distinguished today. These can occur simultaneously and affect various organs (e.g., mucous membranes, bronchi, skin, blood vessels, kidneys, liver, gastrointestinal tract). Depending on the type of reaction, symptoms may occur acutely and repeatedly (e.g., asthma) or follow a slower, more constant course (atopic dermatitis). Allergies are not static; they can often change for the better or for the worse.
Treatment with so-called antiallergic drugs can alleviate or prevent symptoms. Avoiding allergens is an attempt to improve the condition or prevent symptoms from occurring. The only causal treatment is hyposensitization, also known as specific immunotherapy. This procedure can only be used for Type I allergies.
Gentle infrared heat therapy can help
When it comes to allergic conditions, people often ask whether heat therapy is beneficial or whether it might worsen symptoms. Given the complexity of allergic conditions, the individual nature of potential allergens, and the general lack of conclusive clinical studies, it is not possible to provide a universal answer to this question.
Studies have shown that heat therapy can have a mild immunomodulatory effect. Furthermore, microbial factors and reduced defensin concentrations in the skin and
mucous membranes are considered potential contributing factors in various allergies.
To summarize:
Gentle heat therapy could therefore certainly help alleviate certain allergic conditions.
